about

The next release to emerge via Sharp And Ready, the platform for the New Wave of UK Sound System Music on Tru Thoughts, is from Ed West & RTKal who unleash “The Frass EP” on 27th November. This four-tracker melds an eclectic platter of bass-laden beats from London producer Ed West (who is also the drummer in revered Reggae band The Drop) with the stylings of unstoppable Birmingham upstart MC RTKal. Also stepping up to the mic are Toddla T’s right-hand man Serocee and Jimmy Screech (Ghost Writerz).

Kicking things off in a Reggae-tipped Dubstep direction, title track “Frass feat. Seroccee” pairs wonky bars with a crunked-up beat for a soundtrack to a monumental session, the Brum-aican energy and sparky atmosphere reaching a tasty peak in the third verse as RTKal and the venerable Serocee go bar-for-bar freestyle. “Madover” sees West tackling new sonic territory, his bespoke Bashment-flavoured beat laying the ground for RTKal to do what he does best and step out with an authoritative performance, showing off the rhythmic versatility that makes him one of the standout rappers to rise through the UK scene and has seen his recent ‘Skunk Rock’ mixtape release burning a trail from Complex to Grime Culture to BBC Radio 1/1Xtra.

The lyrical dexterity, grit and wit continue on “Woah Nanna”, RTKal tapping into his Jamaican-British heritage and hip hop influences to spin frank and compelling stories over a hypnotic, dub-fuelled loop laced with live trumpet. Launching in with a whip-smart freestyle from RTKal over bare drums, “Style Pon Target feat. Ghost Writerz” quickly ratchets up from stripped-back beginnings into a punchy, Grime-y party tune. A pristine verse and unshakable chorus hook come from Jimmy Screech, returning the favour following RTKal’s recent guest spots for Ghost Writerz; Screech’s main project alongside producer Sleepy Time Ghost, GWz have been spearheading the Sharp And Ready imprint with support from RWD, Clash, THUMP and Get Darker to Huw Stephens, Toddla T (and more on BBC R1/1Xtra), Steve Lamacq, Ras Kwame, Mi-Soul and across specialist and international media.
